God’s Text Message

10 Essentials for Love

Exodus 20:1-17

  1. I. The Ten Commandments reveal the authority of God.

A. The Bible that Jesus taught from and the Bible that Jesus so revered was not the New Testament but the Old Testament.

B. The Bible of the first century church was the Old Testament.

C. Jesus came to fulfill the law, not to abolish the law.

  1. He fulfilled the Ceremonial Law that involves the sacrificial system by becoming the perfect sacrifice.
  2. He fulfilled the Judicial Law regarding the nation of Israel.
  3. He fulfilled the Moral Law (which includes the 10 Commandments) by explaining it and clarifying it.

  1. II. The Ten Commandments reveal the grace of God

God’s law is an expression of God’s grace.

God intended the Ten Commandments to be His instruction manual on how to live in freedom.

The voice that spoke the Ten Commandments to Moses was none other than the voice of Jesus Christ who is the Word eternal.

When we meet Jesus, we meet the Author Himself.

.

  1. III. The 10 Commandments reveal our need of a Savior.

The law cannot cure us, but it can point us to the lawgiver who is also the Savior.

Salvation has never been by good works or by keeping the law.  Salvation has always been based on God’s grace.

The law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith.” Galatians 3:24 (NIV)

  1. IV. The 10 Commandments reveal the character of our Savior.

The law is nothing less than the words of the Lawgiver.

The law expresses the character and thoughts of God.

“The person who keeps all of the laws except one is as guilty as the person who has broken all of God’s laws.” (James 2:10 NLT)

Romans 7:7-25

Through His death and resurrection God has made a way of escape for us.

How may we appropriate His mercy?  How can we have Him rescue us?

  1. Confession
  2. Repentance
  3. Follow Jesus daily
