03.06.11 Penitence to Praise to Power

From Penitence to Praise to Power

Pastor Aimee Stone

March 6, 2011

Penitence

1.) We are all in need of a Savior

2.) We are called to join with Christ in his death and
suffering.

3.) Why FORTY?

  • Biblical number of discipline, devotion, and preparation.
  • In Exodus Moses was on the Mountain for 40 days.
  • The spies in Numbers were in the Promised Land 40 days.
  • Elijah traveled 40 days before he reached the cave where he had his vision.
  • Ninevah was given 40 days to repent.
  • Jesus spent 40 days fasting and preparing for His ministry.

4.) Lent is an intentional season.

5.) Lent is a time we grieve what sin has cost us.

6.) Our attitude should be the same as that of
Christ Jesus

7.) The season of Lent invites us to choose the path of suffering.

“If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross daily, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world
but are yourself lost or destroyed?” (Luke 9:23-25)

Praise

1.) Without the empty grave, we do not have any hope of resurrection.

2.) Easter is a season of celebration.

3.) We have hope because Christ IS risen!

“And if our hope in Christ is only for this life, we are more to be pitied than anyone in the world. But in fact, Christ has been raised from the dead. He is the first of a great harvest of all who have died….  Christ was raised as the first of the harvest; then all who belong to Christ will be raised when he comes back!”  (1 Cor 15:19-20; 23)

Power

Pentecost Sunday is the day we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit to every believer!

“What you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people.’… God raised Jesus from the dead, and we are all witnesses of this. Now he is exalted to the place of highest honor in heaven, at God’s right hand.
And the Father, as he had promised, gave him the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us, just as you see and hear today.”

(Acts 2:16-17; 32-33)
