With Jesus on the Way to Calvary

The Triumphal Entry

Matthew 21:1-11

Sermon #6 in series

From then on Jesus began to tell his disciples plainly that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem, and that he would suffer many terrible things at the hands of the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but on the third day he would be raised from the dead.

22 But Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things. “Heaven forbid, Lord,” he said. “This will never happen to you!”

Matthew 16:21-22 NLT

“If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me. 25 If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. 26 And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?

Matthew 16:24-26 NLT

19 I died…so that I might live for God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Galatians 2:19-20 NIV

The issue facing each of us is not “Would you be willing to die for Christ” but rather “Have you already died for Christ?” “Have you died to self-centeredness and self-rule?”

The crowds cheering Jesus were excited because they were looking for a hero; a miracle worker; a magic Messiah who would grant them all their wishes.  He was their “blessing giver.” Their sin- clouded eyes saw exactly what they wanted to see.  They saw the king of their dreams coming to grant them their wishes.
