The Comforter Has Come Pentecost Sunday John 20 & Acts 2 June 12, 2011
“God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” Romans 8:28 There are 3 dangers that 21st century Christians face regarding Pentecost:
1. THERE IS THE DANGER OF NEVER GETTING THERE.
“The church has halted somewhere between Calvary and Pentecost.” Joe Brice
2. THERE IS THE DANGER OF GETTING THERE AND NEVER LEAVING.
True Pentecost happens upstairs but quickly moves downstairs and out into the streets. They didn’t stay to revel and worship for another ten days. They were thrust out on a mission.
There is the temptation to worship the experience of Pentecost and never leave the upper room.
3. THERE IS THE DANGER OF GETTING THERE AND LEAVING TOO SOON.
“Do not have your concert first, and then tune your instrument afterward.” J. Hudson Taylor
We have tried to be the church before we were truly resourced to be the church.
We are all tempted to seek an experience rather than seeking Christ.
Peter’s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?” Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This promise is to you, and to your children, and even to the Gentiles—all who have been called by the Lord our God.” Acts 2:37-39 |
